Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is teaming up with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) to build support for The Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act.

According to a recent article on The Hill the bill would “make firearms manufacturers and dealers liable for harm caused by the weapons they sell.” Sounds good to me…but I thought they were already held liable?

Taurus lost a lawsuit over faulty safeties and Remington lost one over faulty triggers. Maybe it’s something else this bill is after.

“Democrats say the bill targets irresponsible gun dealers who sell firearms to ‘straw purchasers,’ which act as intermediaries between dealers and criminals.” Well that makes sense. Stop people from getting firearms that is illegal for them to own by having some one else buy the firearms for them.

Oh wait…if you were to try and purchase a firearm from a dealer you would have to fill out A Firearms Transaction Record (commonly known as Form 4473). And if you were to fill out this form you would come across this statement (in boldface type): “Warning: you are not the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm on behalf of another person. If you are not the actual buyer, the dealer cannot transfer the firearm to you.” Which means it already is illegal to purchase firearms for another person or do a “straw purchase”. Not only that but in 2014 The U.S. Supreme Court ruled for strict enforcement of the federal ban on gun “straw purchases”.

Which leaves me this question, why do we need this bill? I urge you to write your representatives and put an end to this useless waste of our time and money. Here is a link to the NRA-ILA website where you can conveniently write all your representatives at once.
