I don’t know what it is about skunks that my dogs have found so fascinating. Well, I should rephrase that…I don’t know what it is about skunks that my one dog found so interesting. Our first dog got sprayed by a skunk a handful of times and he learned to stay away from them.
Our second dog…she LOVED them. I think there was a period where she got sprayed almost every other day for about 2 weeks straight. I should have bough stock in baking soda and hydrogen peroxide!!
If you have dog(s) that love skunks as much as our one dog did, then I would suggest stocking up on a few supplies and keep them in a bucket along with this recipe.
- One quart bottle of hydrogen peroxide
- One quarter cup of baking soda
- Two teaspoons of liquid soap
- 1. Pour the peroxide into a large container or bucket.
- 2. Add the baking soda, and stir.
- 3. Then add the soap and mix again.
- 4. Sponge the mixture onto your dog avoiding their eyes.
- 5. Wait five minutes.
- 6. Thoroughly rinse off your dog.
This has been the one method we have tried that seemed to do the most good. Granted, if our dog got wet the skunk smell came back, but barely noticeable. AND it was a lot better than the alternative!
